Built on Independence. Focused on You.

Thornton Financial Services was founded by Paul R. Thornton with a single conviction: community financial institutions deserve executive benefits expertise that works for them – not for a carrier, a corporate quota, or a parent company. As an independent, owner-led firm, TFS has no production requirements and no conflicting obligations. Every recommendation we make is driven by what is genuinely right for your institution.

The people behind your plan

TFS is a small, experienced team with deep roots in executive benefits for financial institutions. Every client works directly with people who know this industry and are invested in getting it right.

Paul R. Thornton
President & CEO

After earning his BBA in Accounting from Kennesaw State University in 1998, Paul has spent his entire career in the financial services industry. He started as a financial analyst and plan designer with Benmark, Inc., a leading provider of BOLI and nonqualified benefit programs for community banks. Working closely with insurance agents and carriers to build customized benefit solutions, he ultimately rose to Vice President, overseeing both the Sales Support and Client Service teams.

Paul later joined Clark Consulting as a Client Relationship Manager, supporting community bank clients and maintaining a high standard of service. When the firm exited the BOLI and nonqualified market, he helped transform the organization into a full sales and service platform. Involved in all aspects of the BOLI and nonqualified benefits business, he was then tasked to direct the development of BPS Cynergy, their exclusive online assetdelivery platform.

By 2015, Paul had taken on an ownership role within the firm, presiding over all sales proposals, servicing, and administration. In 2021, he assumed full leadership of BPS, directing its strategy and longterm growth.

Away from the office, Paul enjoys life with his wife, Desiree, and their three children –Elizabeth, Alex, and Madelyn – who keep him both grounded and inspired.

A.J. Rhodes VII
Executive Vice President of Administration

A.J. oversees the firm’s operational, administrative, and governance functions. He joined TFS in 2025 with more than two decades of experience in operations leadership, compliance-driven project management, and cross-functional execution— work that strengthens TFS’s mission of helping client institutions recruit better, retain the best, and reward beyond.

His career spans financial services, healthcare technology, and national operations. He began at Charles Schwab, earning multiple top-producer distinctions before moving into broader operational leadership as Vice President of Operations at S.P.C.I. He later held key roles at Ciox Health/Datavant and Virtix Health, deepening his expertise in compliance, analytics, vendor management, and large-scale project delivery.

A.J. holds a BBA in Finance from Kennesaw State University and a Master of Arts in Education. Outside of work, he enjoys life with his wife, Cheryl, their three grown daughters, and a lively pack of four rescue dogs who keep the household energetic and full of personality.
